My Favorite Color


It's been a lot like Christmas around here lately.  And I've grown quite fond of the FedEx guy, the mail guy, and the UPS guy.  They come around all the time these days and bring me stuff!!  Boxes from Team Trakkers, Saucony, First Endurance, Tri-Swim.  Like I said, Christmas in April!

But I digress.  I have a new favorite color.  Green!  If I had a million dollars, I'd buy you a green dress but not a real green dress that's cruel.  I've always been drawn to black, white, red, pink and blue.  But now it is green thanks to Team Trakkers!!!  I love this color and I love my new stuff.  Check it out:

This is what I am racing in this season.  It's made by Saucony and it's super soft and comfy.  Love it!

And here are my new racing shoes!  It's almost tragic that I have to put speed laces in these 'cuz the laces have gold sparkles in them....don't they look fast??

OK, PIC always does jumping pictures so I tried one too.  Didn't work.  But check out the new Trakkers kit!  Love it!






And a sweet new bag, but the best part was the note on it:  Good luck Michelle!  Trakkers 2010.  Have I mentioned how excited I am to be a part of Team Trakkers this year??

Showdown in Knoxville


OK, quick post here about the Team Trakkers Elite challenge coming up on May 9 at the Rev3 race in Knoxville!  Team Trakkers (yes, my team - yippee!) has challenged Team Kswiss/Trek to a showdown.....as in winner takes home $5,000.  Listen to this smack talk from Michael Lovato and Richie Cunnigham.  Oh boy, this is gonna be fun!

0 for 2

Yep, it's official.  I am cursed from ever (OK, that's probably a bit drastic) running the Platte River Half Marathon.  Three years ago it was a vicious case of salmonella poisoning that had me at a fever of 102 on race morning and telling Michael, no really, I think I'm OK.  He was calling the doctor and put me right back to bed.  This year?  I swore off cookie dough and cake batter and anything that looked remotely undercooked.  I had a great swim on Friday and couldn't wait to top off the weekend with a great run.

On Saturday morning, PIC and I decided to explore a new (to us) route for our long but easy ride.  From the CC Rez we rode out Jordan Road and made our way through Parker and then found Matsenbacher (I'm sure horribly misspelled) Road.  Since I was running the next day, PIC pulled the majority of the way, and we were having fun passing other riders and singing our cheesy 80s tunes out loud.  Oh yeah, Journey, Foreigner, Queen, Styx. It.Was.Awesome.  Until I did something I always do.  I waved at a fellow rider, it was a casual fun ride....I always wave.  As soon as I took my friggin' hand off the bars I hit the most massive bump (the size of a VW I believe) and went flying.  I ended up in the middle of the road wondering how in the hell I got there.  My mix1 was in the middle of the road.  So was my bike.  So was the power meter.  WTF???  PIC is yelling at me to get out of the road and I am clearly confused plus my hip is killing me.  And it was obvious that there would be no half marathon for me on Sunday.  The guy I waved to even turned around to make sure I was alright.

To answer everyones questions:
1.  He wasn't that cute.  At all.
2.  He waved first
3.  Yes, I was on my TT bike
4.  The bike is fine thank you very much and I did NOT hit my head
5.  One tiny hole in my jersey
6.  5 colors on the bruise so far
7.  The mix1 held up just fine
8.  I didn't realize I had road rash until 1/2 hour later
9.  Husband hid all sharp objects in the house when he knew I couldn't race
10.  Hip not broken/fractured


OK, here it is 4 days later.....it's actually starting to look better!!!  Plus I really don't think the picture does it justice.  How many colors can you count?





We kept riding because we were in the middle of nowhere and it made sense to keep my hip moving and really, just to get back on the bike.  If there is anything PIC and I have learned over the last couple of years is to get back on the bike as soon as possible if you crash (assuming the bike is ridable).  And it did feel better after I rode.  But as soon as I got off the bike?  Yeah, pain.  As in barely able to walk pain.  Michael did the right thing, he gave me an ice pack, told me to lay down, and then hid all sharp objects (mentioned above).  Then, he handed me a hard lemonade as I was in the shower screaming from the road rash.  Who else can take care of me like that???  Thank you Michael!!!

1650

Quick race report on yesterday's mile swim at the Masters State Swimming Championship meet at DU.


1650 yards.  A "mile".  20-someodd minutes of, well, I suppose the best way to describe it is pain.  Not to mention the places your mind can travel to while in the midst of this race.  So when I got the go-ahead from CV (which is kinda funny because I'm pretty sure I only volunteered PIC for this one, and I would be the happy counter.  Wait a minute....) I tentatively signed up.  I tried to "forget".  But I finally put my name in.

I went into yesterday's race with the hope of beating my time from 2 years ago.  I felt pretty confident that I could do this based on some recent results and the fact that I am feeling strong in the pool.  But, you never know what the day will bring!

As I stood behind the blocks waiting for my heat, I wasn't really nervous at all.  I just wanted to get in the pool and swim.  I even yawned.  I was ready.  I was seeded into heat 4 as the second fastest swimmer based on my time from 2 years ago and lane 6 was my lane.  Could either be good or bad for me......if I'm leading the heat will I have the extra motivation/GRRRRR to push myself?  I even got a last minute "pep" talk from stud swimmer/coach Mike Mann (he used to coach me at Inverness)....something to the effect of make sure you sprint that first 100 and breathe every 7th breath.  Huh???  

On the blocks, in the water, come up for air.  First 100.  First 100.  First 100.  Relax.  Breathe.  Wow, the girl next to me must have taken Mike's advice because she is flying!!!!  Her first 100 must have been a 1:05!  But, I let her go and in my mind I knew I would reel her in later.  Second 100.  Settle.  You've got a long way to go.  But my breathing was solid.  My stroke rate seemed just fine.  And I slowly began to pull away from the other swimmers that I could see.  I kept focusing on the numbers at the end of the lane.  I couldn't see the pace clock to judge where I was at - a good thing.  And the song I had in my head? Metric's Help I'm Alive.  I changed the verse from my heart keeps beating like a hammer to I'm feeling like a hammer....


And the girl that took off at the beginning?  Yep, she started dying early.  Like around the 500 if I remember.  And I reeled her in.  But she put up a fight and stayed with me for awhile.  But I kept on and she finally cracked.  Was I leading the heat?  Was I getting the final lap horn?  I had no idea...feeling like a hammer.  My arms and shoulders were a bit stiff and heavy starting off but now I didn't really feel them.  But I did feel them and everything else.  Relax.  Breathe.  And then I was in the 50s for the lap counter....not much more to go.  Go.  Go.  Go.  Was I going to PR?  At this point I didn't care!!!  Get this done with!!!  I got the horn....I was leading the heat!  Last 50 I was determined that no one would catch me and I kicked with whatever I had left and hit that wall.  And.  Was.  Done.

I looked up at the clock and saw my time.  20:29.  And had only one thing to say.  Begins with an F.  Ends with a K.  Not sure why that was the first thing out of my mouth.  Good thing no kids were present!!!  Beat my time from 2 years ago by over a minute.  PIC's husband Troy was our split taker and when I looked at how I had paced it I was extremely happy!  First 50 was 34.  Each and every 50 after that was 37.  Sa-Weet!!

Next up was PIC and her first swim meet experience.  Read her report here......but, her googles stayed on and she nailed it.  So happy for her and so happy that her hard hard work in the pool has started to pay dividends.  Nice!!  How lucky am I to have Sonja as my main PIC and training partner??!!!!

It's Spring

And that must mean there is racing to be done this weekend!!!  Yip Yip!!!  In a few short hours, I will be heading to DU to swim the 1650, a race I love to hate.  I know what this race is going to bring (i.e. pain) but I am also pretty excited to see if I can bring home a new PR.  I keep reminding myself, the first 100.  The first 100......not to give away all my "secrets" but really, that first 100 can be a deal maker or breaker.  And to top it off, I get to watch (and count for) PIC in her first swim meet EVAH!!!  This is gonna be fun.

Of course, I can't just do one event this weekend, so on Sunday I will head over to Littleton and run in the Platte River Half Marathon.  Once again, hoping that I bring home a new PR in this one.  We will see.....it's been a kind of train-through week and I am really not rested.  At all.  But I will go for it (per my instructions from Coach CV) and see what the day brings.   The last time I attempted this race I didn't even get to the starting line due to a severe case of salmonella poisoning.  So, I will not be baking this weekend, or eating any sort of raw cookie dough or cake batter.  I will not eat sushi or undercooked meats of any sort.  There will be no buffets.  I will get to the start line!

And, since it is spring, I can't help but get giddy at the fact that my first TRI is just around the corner....4 weeks and counting.  Whoop Whoop!

Camp

I remember going to camp as a kid.....looking forward to that week away from the parents and going to the mountains and hanging out with other kids in tents.  Going to the mess hall.  Hiking.  Singing songs by the camp fire.  Telling ghost stories.  Listening to the wind in the trees.  Riding horses.  Cleaning up horse poop.  You know, all the fun things!!!

Well, last week a client came into town (who also happens to be a coach too) to put on a training camp for his athletes (and himself) and I had the opportunity to participate!  I was excited because I knew that a) the camp would be fun,  b) there would be no horse poop scooping and, c) I'd have some new training partners to kick my ass!  It's always good to shake up your workout and training regime with new training partners (especially since my main training PIC is still recovering after her 100 miler) and this was definitely the case for me!

It started Wednesday afternoon with my client Jay doing a lactate test with me on the bike.  Sorry folks, no pictures of that sweat and blood fest, but the results were just what I wanted to see (and for my coach too!!)  My legs were toasty after that but Thursday was another "test" day for me  on the bike after some intense body and core work.  Friday brought some fun with a long course swim day at DU and a MAF test for me on the track.  (clearly far too many tests for me in the span of three days....did I pass?  did I fail?? Arrrggggghhhh???!!!)  Saturday?  We rode Shadow Mountain in some incredibly windy conditions.  Then Sunday there was a nice 10 mile run.  Lots of good work in just a few short days.

I like camp!!  Next time though, it will also include some well needed massage and chiro work, I better give Tri-Massage a call here soon and get up to see Ken at Active Care muy pronto!!
