Mt. Lemmon

Day three of training camp brought yet another swim, a ride up Mt. Lemmon, and a run!  25 miles of climbing bliss.  (Yes, I know this happened well over a week ago but hey, I've been sick!!) Here it is in pictures:

After 25 miles of climbing, we ended up in Cookieville, errr, Sommerville.  We had heard they had cookies the size of your head.  Mmmmmmmm!

TTC Dia Dos

Friday, the TTC (Tuscon Training Camp) crew were up and at 'em early.....there was a swim and a long ride on the agenda!  CV finally woke up and we were off to the pool for another cold swim.

Breakfast #2 and then it was off for a ride to Madera Canyon!  A planned 6 hours on the bike - the weather was warm, the sun was shining and I was NOT on my trainer.  Once again, life was good.  Except for a problem with my new saddle.  See, Kompetitive Edge set me up with a new ISM Adamo saddle.  I had tried it on my road bike and loved it so it made sense for me to put it on my TT bike since I rarely ride the road bike.  Unfortunately for me, we discovered that my TT bike has a flaw in the seat post design and my saddle couldn't be positioned with a slight downward tilt.  It actually had a slight upward tilt.  This became apparent about 1.5 hours into the ride when my hips started to hurt.  At 2.5 hours, the pain was starting to become more than an annoyance.  It shifted from my hips to my lower back and back and forth.  I stood up lots to relieve the pressure and just got through the ride.  I was outside and it was beautiful so I concentrated on that.

As we were chowing down on some Trader Joe's yumminess, CV made it a project to fix my seat - thank goodness since I wasn't quite sure how to tell Michael I needed a new TT bike to fit my saddle.  Phew - Mt. Lemmon was on the agenda for Saturday!!

Once again, we ate, showered, prepared for the next day and we had just a bit of time to talk and listen to some quality ukelele!

Tucson Training Camp Dia Uno

What a weekend, or rather, 5 days that included a weekend!  After the last miserable weather month in Colorado, I finally escaped the bad weather, packed up my bike and headed south.  Coach ChuckieV hosted PIC, Lauren and me to a training camp.  The last time I went to camp, I'm pretty sure I was 13 and a girl scout.  In that camp, we rode horses, built campfires, made s'mores, and did arts and crafts.  This camp was a bit different.  I really didn't know what to expect since this was my first triathlon training camp.  Sure, the schedule said swimbikerun every day but really, I figured there would be some free time to read.  Or watch a movie.  Or comb my hair.  Or blog.  Boy, was I wrong.

Here's how Day One played out:

We arrived in Tucson on Thursday and made our way to CV's apartment.  Of course, we were hungry and there was a MAF run test and a "moderate" swim on the agenda.  So, I figured we could have lunch and then hit the moderate swim because I certainly didn't want to run on a semi-full stomach.  Mistake.  "moderate" swim turned into something that included all out 100's.  A 400TT.  And a 200TT.  I told Ang (pro Angela Naeth - watch out for her this year folks, she's gonna storm the castle!!) that I would try not to puke on her side of the lane line (pool had one lane line).  Did I mention the pool was 70 degrees?  That makes it a wetsuit swim!!!  And, that makes it a fast swim!!!  I put up some times that I haven't seen since I was a teenager.  A 1:01 100?  A 2:09 200?  To be fair, I was incredibly see a couple of other pro triathletes showed up at the pool that are pretty good.  In addition to Ang, swimming next to me was Tim O'Donnell and current world Ironman champ Mirinda Carfrae - Boo Freakn' Yah!

Next up was the run.  This was great - my run time has been increasing steadily.  But by minutes.  CV is being very careful in building up my run mileage with my almost-past foot problems - I KNOW this is the right thing to do but I do miss "long" runs.  Thursday was the closest thing to a long run I've had since IMAZ.  The 4 amigas warmed up on the trails behind the track and then headed back to start the test.  The community college track team was winding down their workout and we started ours.  I haven't been on a track in months and it was all I could do to stay within my heart rate ranges.  But I put in 4 good miles and felt awesome.  Test results were as expected at this time of year but the sun was setting, it was a peaceful time of day, and I was in Tucson training.  Life couldn't get much better:)

A trip to Trader Joe's was up next to procure food for the next couple of days.  Eating, showers, building bikes, talking...and it was time for bed.  Friday was going to a big day and we needed some quality shut eye.

Roll With The Punches

What can I say?  This was one interesting week!  I had Monday planned perfectly!  Masters first thing in the morning, followed by a SSCVS (that's a super secret ChuckieV session).  This would put me home and done with my workouts for the day by 8:30am!!  I would work, blog, clean, cook, budget, pay bills, walk the dog, and then pick up the girls from school at 3:45.  Except nothing ever goes as planned does it??  With Michael sick, I needed to stay home in the morning and help get the kiddos out the door for school.  And with that, my day was shot.  No biggie, I'll get it all taken care of tomorrow.
What does one wear to walk the dog when it's -20 degrees out?  Let me count the layers: long underwear, ski pants, 4 shirts, down jacket, neck warmer, ski gloves, very warm hat, goggles.  Kona had no idea it was cold out.

Except for the cold front that descended upon our state (and 29 others).  School for Tuesday:  closed.  Arghhhhh!  Now, I won't be able to spin with PIC - which I really hate to miss.  To sum up: sick hubs, energetic kids and dog inside house because it's too darn cold to go outside.  No biggie.  Kiddos will go back to school on Wednesday and maybe it will warm up and I'll get things done.  Yeah.  No.  School closed again on Wednesday.  (on another note, I'm pretty sure when I was a kid I had to go to school when it was cold and my parents told me to suck it up - well maybe not that but I did go to school. And it was a 10 mile walk and uphill both ways.)

And on Wednesday?  The 8yo woke up with a fever and a to the doctor she goes.  Say it with me.....YEAH!  Influenza B!!!  Sweet, she doesn't go back to school for the rest of the week!!  Poor thing though, she's a trooper and is starting to feel much better.

With all the sickness going around in my house, I thought about moving out for a few days but ended up staying and taking care of the family (do I get a medal for that?).  With a mask.  Not really but I do have one.  CV took my workout intensity down a notch or two and I'm doing my darndest to not get sick.  So far so good.  I actually feel great!  Today, I swam masters, took the little doggie for a walk, shoveled snow for an hour (FUN!) and am now finally getting to all those things I wanted to do on Monday.

Gotta roll with the punches right?

Can't wait for next week......Tucson Training Camp starts Thursday!!!  Yippee!!!  So excited to head to some warmer weather and ride my bike.....wait for it......OUTSIDE!  I will actually be able to take my trainer skewer out of the back wheel and put the regular one in.  It's the little things that can make my day:)
